Considerations... Backing up IIS 6 web files and SQL Server 2005 Express database

Anyone know of a good "free" way to back up web files and SQL Server 2005 Express Database?

I was able to use Windows Server 2003 Backup utility to back up the folder where the Databases were stored, as well as the web files, with no errors.

But I have heard a lot of discussion that you can't just simply backup SQL Server data files?

I'm wondering how sound the backup I've created is...

Any suggestions?

Try the link below to dowload the eval version of the full SQL Server 2005 it is good for 180 days so you have to buy the developer edition which is $60 or less later. Install it as a named instance and register the Express so you can use the backup and restore wizard to backup your databases. You don't need any third party tool to backup SQL Server if your databases are less than 1000. Hope this helps.

connectivity issue

hey there

I hope I have posted in correct forum - please let me know

I have 1 XP box - SQL Server Standard 2005 - running IIS (Server 1)

I have 1 XP box - SQL Server Express - running IIS (Server 2)

script called (test)

Server 1 can host web pages eg aspx and collect data from Server 2 (noted in web.config)

http:\localhost\test or http:\Server 1\test - either collect data and display

Server 1 cannot go to http:\Server 2\test - error default settings do not allow remote connections.

Server 2 cannot host web pages and collect data from Server 1 - error default settings do not allow remote connections.

Is this because Server 2 has Express Edition?

thanks

Dianne

Hi JewelFire,

Try following the steps on this page to enable remote connections on your server: http://www.cryer.co.uk/brian/sqlserver/hresult_0x2%20npp_error_establishing_connection.htm

Thanks

Waseem

|||

thanks for this but at the moment

we have turned the firewall off on Server 2?

all services are enabled.

any thing else I should check?

Connection to Analysis Services 2005 using .NET 2.0

Hello,
I'm trying to use ASP.NET 2.0 to connect to a 2005 Analysis services database.
My script run on a IIS 6 web site under MS Server 2003 SP1.
For my test, the Analysis services database and the web site are on the same

acount "IUSR_ServerName". The authenticated access is define to "Integrated
windows authentification".
When I execute my web page, the connection can't be established with de
database, and the following error is raised :

Is there anybody who have a suggestion why the connection can not be
established ? or is anyone have a sample solution to access to an analysis
services database through a web site ?
The User ID and Pwd parameters on the connection string are only used
when connecting via http, so the are being ignored, Your ASP.NET site
will be trying to access SSAS using the identity defined in the
application pool (which by the look of it is using the default local
service account)
Your options as I see them are.
1) Change the identity of the application pool in IIS 6 to use a domain
account that has access to the cubes.
2) Configure SSAS for HTTP connections so that you can use the User ID
and Pwd parameters on the connection string
3) Set up SSAS to allow anonymous connections.
I have put these options in order from what I consider "best" to "worst"
from a security & performance standpoint. However this is just my
opinion, there may be factors in your particular situation that I am not
aware of that may cause you to prefer one of the options that I have
ranked lower.

Connection String to SQL Express on another computer

I have an XP Pro machine running a classic ASP site in IIS - the version that comes on the XP Pro CD. The site makes a connection to an MSDE database on the same machine named InControl. I have moved that database to SQL Express 2005 and want to test it with the ASP site. SQL Express 2005 is running on a separate Vista machine. I am currently using this connection string:

objConn.ConnectionString = "Provider=SQLOLEDB;Data Source=400SC;Initial Catalog=InControl;User ID=" & uid & ";Password=" & upass & ""

Where 400SC is the name of the XP Pro machine and InControl is the database. The variables uid and upass are pulled from Session when the connection string is created.

I have tried different Provider names and various combinations of server name and ip address with and without port numbers for the Data Source. All of them yield some variation of this error:

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server (0x80004005)
[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.

What should the connection string look like?

Thanks for the help.

PS - If the solution involves a port, do I need to make that port an exception in the Vista Firewall?

The sqlexpress server may have an instance name. Try changing it to "Data Source=400SC\SQLEXPRESS"

|||

This is the string I initially tried to access SQL Express on the other computer - CSC_DELL. I recieved the error message in the original post. Hard coding the User ID and Password also yeilds the same error. The User is set-up in SQL and the database.

objConn.ConnectionString = "Provider=SQLOLEDB;Data Source=CSC_DELL\SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=InControl;User ID=" & uid & ";Password=" & upass & ""

|||

Create a new file on your desktop. Rename the file to "test.udl" Double-click the file, and create a connection to your database. Once the "Test Connection" succeeds, then close the dialog box and view the contents of your .udl file in notepad. This will give you a connection string to compare against.

|||

Created a .udl file, but the SQL Express server on the Vista machine was not listed in the Server drop down list. I used the SQL Configuration tool and enabled listening with TCP/IP and Named Pipes - both were disabled. Also made a 1433 port exception in the Vista firewall. Tried udl, again, and the server still did not show. Both computers are in the same workgroup on my home network. I tried typing the name of the SQL Express server in the drop down list - didn't work. Everything I try yields the "SQL Server does not exist or access denied." Still stuck.

connection problems

Hi, I've installed VWD, SQL Express and IIS successfully using Windows autentication. Everything went smoothly and I had a functional connection to my new database. But suddenly without any obvious reason I could not connect. When I try to connect inside VWD I receive the error:

"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connection to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)."

When I try to connenct through SQL Server Management Studio Express I receive the error:

Cannot connect to I6000\SQLExpress. Additional info as described above.

I haven't done any changes as far I know, so what could be the issue here? I haven't any experience from working with SQL so I am very grateful for any help.

Open VS2005, go to Tools/Connect to Database and try from there to open the database. That should tell you what the problem is.

Cheers

Hi cosmos,

You would have to habilitate TCP/IP protocol for your SQL Server Express.

Good Coding!

Verify that the instance is actually running. Open SQL Configuration Manager and check out the Services node. You should see SQLEXPRESS listed as running. If it isn't, start it.

There error your getting indicates that the Instance either doesn't exist or isn't running.

|||

Thanks for your answer,

The SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) is actually running, but there is also another instance, SQL Server Browser, which is not running. But I guess the problem is somewhere else?

|||Hi,

SQL Server Express uses a dynamic port, if you don′t want to specify it within the conenction string, you will have to use the SQL Browser which acts like a redirector between client requests and the actual grabbed ports of SQL Server Express.

HTH, Jens K. Suessmeyer.

http://www.sqlserver2005.de|||

You should be do this form the

programs,Microsoft SQL Server 2005, Configurations tools, Sql Server Surface Area Configuration.

In this there′s an option Surface Area Configuration for services.

In the select component choose Remote Connections, and then click in Local and remote connections, after in using TCP/IP only.

And you problem it′s resolve.

|||

There is no need to enable remote connections (sorry Kaos) because you are connecting to your local instance of SQLExpress. Jens is correct, you need to either enable the Browser or specify a port # in your connection string.

Mike
