Connectivity with a SQL instance.

Hi,
I installed on a failover cluster, one default virtual sql
server installation named SERVER1 and a other one
installation of virtual server with instance name called
server2\ufa.
When I try to connect true a firewall on SERVER1 with an
UDL file the connection is OK, but When I'm trying the
same test on SERVER2\ufa I've got this error :
[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Invalid Instance()).]
When I pinging SERVER1 it's OK, When I trying a telnet
command on IP adresse 1433 it's also OK
But on virtual SERVER2 the port 1433 is on the name
SERVER2 so when I try a command telnet SERVER2 1433 it's
OK but SERVER2\UFA is not recognize.
On the firewall the port 1433 is open for Both IP adresses
and we openned also the ports 139 and 445 for the Netbios.
( Name Pipes )
Someone can help me ?You probably need to open up port 1434 or better yet, open the Server
Network Utility on SERVER2 and set the port explicity to something other
than 1433 or 1434, then connect using the port number rather than the
instance name. This is well documented in Books on Line under firewalls.

1) If the client has MDAC 2.5 or lower, then you have to specify the port
number when connecting and make sure this port is open at the firewall.
2)If the client has MDAC 2.6 or higher, then specify the port number when
connecting or make sure UDP port 1434 is open at the firewall (This is true
even if the named instance is listening on port 1433)

Is the "connectivity only installation" is equvilant to installing MDAC on

Thanks
It is basically an MDAC installation.

Connection Trusted with Windows98

Hi everybody,
we just developed a standalone application using .NET+ C# + MSDE.
So, we're working to get a setup installation in order to deploy our
application for Windows2000/NT/XP/98 Opertaing System.
At the moment we're making some test on W/98 machine but we've got some
problems:
MSDE has been installed with flag SECURITYMODE=SQL allowing connection
trusted. In fact, after installation by W/XP we're able to connect to db
with OSQL command with -E option and with our application specifying
Integrated Security=SSPI in ConnectionString.
We don't have the same behaviour on Windows98 Operating System.
In spite of the flag mentioned above in installation I can using a
connection trusted.
Any suggestion ?
Thanks in advance, Pierluigi.

I don't know if I correctly undertand your question...
SECURITYMODE=SQL stands for supporting both trusted WinNT connections as SQL
Server authenticated connections...
trusted connections are available only when MSDE(SQL Server) is installed on
WinNT platform... Win9x boxes only allow standard SQL Server authenticated
connections

|||Yes Andrea,
you understood right and you gave me the right answer.
I'm sorry, but I don't realise that trusted connection concept is valid with
WinNT only (I suppose even for WinXP, of course).
So, it means if I want to have a application .net+msde who wants to run on
all MS Operating System including W/98 I MUST use a SQL autentication.
Right ?
We've to consider this fact on the setup routine and in the Connection
String specified inside the C# application.
Thanks so much, Pierluigi.

yep... MSDE must be installed on WinNT platform to take advantage of trusted
connections... the clients can be installed on all OS supported by .Net
thought...

|||Thanks again, Andrea.
Tomorrow we'll start working to use SQL autentication by our application,
supporting in this manner even W/98 platform.
So, we'll install MSDE on our instance with our user/pwd.
We'll use the parameters above in any ConnectionString on our application.
Have a good day, bye, Pierluigi.

connection problems

Hello,

I am doing a bit of troubleshooting on a problem sql server installation and I am trying to rule out possible causes.

A few times over the last few weeks our users have had problems connecting to an application with a sql server 2000 back-end. They are receiving a message stating -2147467259 Fatal error: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL SERVER] [DBNETLIB] General network error. Check your network documentation. 0. This is solved by a reboot of the server.

Roughly the same time as the error began happening we installed a copy of sql server onto someones machine that has nothing to do with the problem application or the data - it has its own data file that it points to locally on the machine and no associated application. There are also no instances pointing to the server. The machine is on the network however and has access to the main server.

I did not think this could cause the problem since it has nothing to do do with the server install and it is essentially a local sql server installation but I have a little doubt, as if you click on the service manager on the local machine, along with showing that the local install is running, when you click on the server arrow, there is a reference to the server install in there stating that the service is running. Is it possible that when this user shuts down their machine, it is somehow stopping the service on the server? There is no evidence of this on the server but by the time we are in, the user has always been using their machine.

I have had no problems installing local copies of sql server elsewhere but could this be something to do with the way the network is set up at this particular company that this local copy is actually controlling the server machine and when shutting it down the services are being stopped - please note however that all services state they are running on the server although I have now uninstalled the local copy just incase so I cannot check if they are running when this machine is shut down so i am hoping someone here can rule this out for me.

I guess my question is - could this local install of sql server be conflicting with the server? Is this normal for all servers on the network to be displayed in the sql server service manager list? Surely there is no problem having a seperate install of sql server on a machine on the network that acts independantly? As I have siad, it is just the fact that the server is in the service manager list on the local machine, that is causing a doubt. At my last company, we all had our own installs with world online and then even had instances pointing to a central server and no problems such as this so I may know the answer here already - just cant remember if the central server came up on everyones local service manager, I think it might have but only certain people had the ability to end processes on the server from their local machine!

Thanksanybody??

Could this install be conflicting with the server install by shutting down the local machine?

Any advice on having other sql server installs on networked machines would be greatly appreciated.
