Connection.TRANSACTION_SERIALIZABLE

I have a java developer using a connection setting of
Connection.TRANSACTION_SERIALIZABLE to our SQL Server. How does this
connection setting interact with the code it touches? If it calls a stored
procedure that is using a nolock hint will it ignore it?

Connection.CommandTimeout

Running VB6 with SQL Server 7, opening a connection and setting this
parameter by Conn.CommandTimeout does not always seem to force a
command (stored procedure) executed through Conn.Execute to timeout
after the specified period. Is anybody able to suggest what may be
going on here.

CommandTimeout starts when the database server has accepted the
command and ends when the database server returns the first record. If
the server or network is busy (or not answering at all), this setting

If you are also running queries from the command object, you need
to see the .CommandTimeout for that object too; the value is not
inherited from the connection object.

Connection to remote server using VPN

Hi - I am a relative newbie to setting up and configuring servers so am a
bit baffled by all the server techno-speak.
My issue - I have a client who is based about 40 miles away who want me to
do some database work for them. I am a freelancer and he is a small company
who relies on a non sql server specific moonlighter for tech support (it's
not as wing and prayer as it might seem!).
They bought MS Small Biz server which includes SQL 2000. I tried to install
it on my XPHome pc but came to the view that you need a 2000/2003 server to
run anything bigger than a 4Gb database. Given that the db will be much
bigger than 4Gb we therefore need to install SQL Server on his server and
run it as a sql server with me installing query analyser and eneterprise
manager on my PC and connect. All fine in theory. Now for security I am
assuming the best way to connect is by using VPN? If this is so, can any
one point me to any info on setting up my end + his end and what may be
required h/w + s/w etc?
His moonlight techie says I need a static IP address... I think I have a
dynamic one, and that all he need to do is set up some filters his end. I
also have a Lynksys router (BEFSR41) and Norton Proff Fiewall. He has router
and firewall his end.

Given what little knowledge I have about your situation, I would say that VPN is your best bet. It's going to be the most economical, practical, and easiest way to connect to your client using SQL. Anything else would be expensive and/or unsecure.
But that's just my opinion...

i am setting some variables here from c# code.

Everything works fine except for Conn string. I understand statements that works fine in SQL does not act same in C# because of string literals.

I need an extra qoute \"" ......."/" that would execute in C#

where as in c#

setting variable value as :

executing this through c# code

if i'm not mistaken, you've already asked this question in a previous incarnation. if true, i believe that i've already suggested that you use sql server agent stored procedures to run your package. you can execute any stored procedure from c# provided that your code has the proper permissions.

does my suggestion not work for you? if so, please tell me why that is.

I need to execute the packages through C# UI. Executing Throught the Agent is a secnd case now. But i found a work around method to set the connection string in my main package and set the value into the varaible which is used by all the pther sub packages. and it is working now.

I am already executing Stored proceedure through c# now for other implementations.

Connection String Length error

Does anyone know if there is a limit to the length a connection string can
be? Or if there is a configuration setting that I am missing. We have a
XML doc which contains the connection strings for multiple database which we
pass to our custom data extension which then figures out which database to
connect to based on other parameters which are passed in. The error we are
getting is that the connection string cannot be > than 1024 characters. Any
help would be appreciated.

if it wokrs at 1023 and fails at 1025 for example...
Is such as length expected ? Heve you checked what the connection string
actually contains (especially white spaces ?) Looks really huge...

learned. We have an application which programatically adds a subscription
to the server. When a subscription is added in this manner the reports work
as expected. However, if I try to run the report from the report manager
via the intranet the report fails as described below. I not sure if this
information is of any help. As a further check I'll run some diff tools
against what I'm passing in. Maybe there is a difference I cannot see by
looking at the text.

>|||Really strange. 1024 is more than 10 lines of 80 characters which look like
really huge for a connection string... My guess would be that you have
indenting or something similar in your XML file that causes white spaces to
be added...

Connection string and external web host.

Hey guys, I'm havnig a bit of trouble setting up my sql reporting tools. My webhost's technical support either does not know what they're doing or might just not care. They 've been unelpful so I'm resorting to asking a stupid noob question again. I hope you guys can help me out.

On my home pc, all i woul have to input is

Data Source=mycomputername\sqlexpress;AttachDbFilename=c:\document and settings\administrator\mydocuments\test8_data1.mdf;Initial Catalog=test

and it would work.

However, when I upload thist stuff to my host and in their admin pages I entered various strings and none of them work.
For the data source I've tried :

Data Source = ./sqlexpress
data source = server ip
data source = server ip/sqlexpress
data source = sqlexpress

as for attachdbfilename I've tried
|datadirectory|\test8_data1.mdf
full path to test8_data1.mdf
and just test8_data1.mdf

In addition to that, in order for this to work, do I need to both input the connection string on the server as well as the .RDL file I upload? I assume both settngs need to be identical for it to work.

Unfortruantely after trying all this,

"An error has occurred during report processing.
Cannot create a connection to data source 'test'.

1) Chane hosting company :) Try CrystalTech, Webhost4life - both have great support and will always help you solve problems like that

2) You will find all info about connection strings here

3) What you have is database file (from sql express) - most hosting companies DO NOT support it, but they should offer some tools to copy it/attach it to full SQL server. Or you can create backup and ask them to restore it for you - after that go to website i gave you and it will work :)

the irony, I use webhost4life.

I sent over 5 helpdesk tickets about what would go into datasource, and I got answers such as, you can input that in the report manager. which wasn't the question.

On my computer I have the computer name so I can easily just do servername\sqlexpress, but i've tried everythign and it won't work on their server.

As for item 3, I did use sqlexpress for my .mdf file , created a backup and restored it into webhost4life's sql server. So that isn't an issue.

With Webhost4life

- login to your acc.

- go to "database" top menu

- click on "MSSQL Admin" left menu

- and you should see all your SQL databases there wit the IP and login ingo you should use to connect to it

Your connections string will look like that

connectionString="Data Source='sql332.mysite4now.com';User ID='USER_HERE';Password=PASSWORD_HERE;database='DATABASENAME_HERE'"

change sql332.mysite4now.com to your sql server

and that is it

hey tom thanks very much. Still having some issues, if you don't mind I'd like to request some more advice.

1) My current status is, went into sqlreport01.mysite4now.com/reports... and created a data source and used that as a shared data source and also inputed the info for my .rdl file
i've also, tried just deleting the shared data source and used a custom datasource and my .rdl report file.

currently its listed as.

I actually don't have EM i beleive. I'm assuming that comes with sql server. I only have express edition. However like i stated, the database itself was loaded into a sqlserver database from the control panel. Do i need eM?

I misread what you had wrote up there so here is the revised script in my rdl file. I noticed it automatically makes a custom data source on the report manager side.

<ConnectString>connectionString="Data Source='sql380.mysite4now.com';User ID='user';Password='password';database='bkt'";</ConnectString>

still does not seem to work. Is there a simple way to test if the report manager can even access sql380.mysite4now.com?

I'm trying to connect to an SQL server from an asp.net
page. Both servers are in the same domain.
The setting on the SQL server are set to accept both
Windows and SQL users.
The users of the webserver log in with windows
authentication.
First I tried to connect to the SQL server using the
Administrator account of the web server. This was no
succes and got the message: SQL Server does not exist or
access denied
After that I changed both administrator accounts to the
same password and tried to connect. Now the connection
was succesfull.
But, if I try to connect from the web I still get the
message: SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
Does anybody have an solution for this problem?
